The Mortal Kombat saga is one of the classics of video gaming history, especially at the beginning of the 90s'. Midway Games, surprised everyone with a very original fighting game, with more than 30 fighters to choose from, each of which had great animations thanks to an amazing graphics engine (at least for that period), and outstanding playability.
Mortal Kombat Project: a classic in the fighting game genre
The game was an interactive gore film where the blood, broken bones, explicit violence, and macabre sounds were always there. Something that is relatively common to see in a video game nowadays, but rather surprising for its time.
Now you can relive those great moments spent fighting against the arcade machine or your friends on the game console, thanks to a version of Mortal Kombat that is perfectly playable on your PC. This MUGEN version of Mortal Kombat includes all the movements, positions, defense movements, fatalities (animation that each fighter used to kill his opponent), and all the playability of the original saga. Furthermore, some of the sounds and animations have been improved, and those characters that were missing a fatality movement now have one.

While Mortal Kombat 4 may have 4 in the title, if you want to get technical and nerdy this is actually the fifth game in the series as there were two versions of Mortal Kombat 3. This was a massive game-changer for the series as it made some pretty radical changes to every aspect of the game. I remember at the time loving this game, but it is not as talked about as the other classic MK games today.
New Foes, Old Problems
This is the most cinematic of all the first wave of Mortal Kombat games. This time around the main villain is the Elder God Shinnok who hundreds of years ago Raiden defeated after he became obsessed with ruling the realms. He was banished to the NetherRealm, but with the aid of the sorcerer, Quan Chi he has escaped. The story of the game is the classic good vs evil, but Mortal Kombat 4 does a great job in giving each of the playable characters their own motivation for taking part in the battle. There are some fun cut scenes which admittedly have aged rather poorly, but at the time these were pretty awesome.
Changing With The Times
The most notable thing about this game is the way it is so different in terms of the art style to the MK games that came before it. Gone are the digitized actors and instead we have fighters that are made with polygons. The characters are done in 3D, but this is still very much a 2D fighting game.
It has the same attack and combo system that you would expect from a Mortal Kombat game, but it introduced weapons into the mix. These would be brought out when you pressed a certain button combo with each character. While it may look different, they managed to keep the NK gameplay style here so it is still a lot of fun to play.

Fatality!
Mortal Kombat 4 tried to take a more serious approach to things so gone were the friendships and babalities. Instead, each character now has two fatalities. Some of these are really brutal such as Quan Chi’s leg rip and Reptile when he would eat the flesh of his opponent’s face. I found the fatalities to be a lot of fun in this game, but I do wish there were more of them. Some of the fatalities can be spoiled by an overactive dynamic camera as well. I wonder what they were thinking with this? I get that it can make things more cinematic, but it does not always work.
I do not care what anyone says, Mortal Kombat 4 is a solid fighting game and a game that is a great deal of fun. If I had to pick a favorite version it would always be Mortal Kombat Gold for the Sega Dreamcast. This version of the game is much better than the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and even PC. The reason being they were able to add in more characters to this game.
